❄️ Why Do I See Ice on My Aircon Pipes?

Seeing ice forming on your aircon pipes may look harmless, but it’s actually a sign that something isn’t working properly inside your system. Aircon pipes should never freeze under normal operation. When they do, it means airflow, refrigerant levels, or internal components are struggling to function the way they should.

If left unchecked, frozen pipes can lead to water leaks, weak cooling, and even compressor damage. Here’s why it happens.

1. Restricted Airflow

Your aircon needs warm air from the room to pass over its cooling coil. When airflow is blocked, the coil becomes too cold and starts freezing.

Common causes:

  • Dirty air filters

  • Dust-clogged coils

  • Blocked return vents

Solution: Clean filters every 2–3 weeks and schedule servicing to clear dust from the coil and blower fan.

2. Low Refrigerant (Gas) Levels

Refrigerant absorbs heat. If levels are low because of a leak, the coil temperature drops too fast, causing condensation to freeze around the copper pipes.

Signs:

  • Weak cooling

  • Hissing noise

  • Ice forming on copper tubes or coils

Solution: A technician must check for leaks and perform a proper gas top-up. Avoid topping up without leak testing, as it will freeze again.

3. Malfunctioning Blower Fan

If the blower fan is weak or faulty, the air won’t circulate properly. With insufficient warm air passing through, the coil temperature falls below freezing.

Solution: Have the fan motor and blower wheel checked, cleaned, or replaced if worn.

4. Frozen Evaporator Coil

Sometimes the coil is already partially frozen inside the unit. This spreads outward to the pipes as the system continues running.

Common causes:

  • Dirty coils

  • Blocked drainage

  • Long hours of use at very low temperature

Solution: Switch off the aircon to defrost. A chemical wash may be needed to fully clear the dirt buildup.

5. Running the Aircon at Very Low Temperatures

Setting your aircon to 16°C or 18°C for long hours can overwork the system and drop coil temperature too quickly.

Solution: Use 24°C to 26°C for normal usage. This reduces freezing issues and saves electricity.

How Sky Blue Aircon Can Help

At Sky Blue Aircon Engineering Pte Ltd, we fix freezing issues by checking the root cause rather than just clearing the ice.

Our Services Include:

  • Coil and blower cleaning

  • Gas leak detection and top-up

  • Fan motor repair

  • Drainage clearing and coil defrost

  • Chemical wash for deep cleaning

The Bottom Line

Ice on your aircon pipes is a warning sign — not something you should ignore. Proper servicing and early checks prevent bigger problems like water leaks, weak cooling, and compressor damage.
