💧 Why Is My Aircon Leaking Water?

It’s a common problem many Singapore homeowners face — you turn on your aircon, and after a while, you notice water dripping from the indoor unit. While it may look minor at first, a leaking aircon can lead to bigger issues such as water damage, mould, and poor cooling performance.

Understanding the causes can help you decide whether simple maintenance or a professional repair is needed. Here’s what could be happening inside your system.

ree

1. Clogged or Dirty Drain Pipe

The most common cause of water leakage is a blocked drain pipe.As your aircon cools the air, condensation forms and needs to flow out through a drainage pipe. Dust, dirt, or algae buildup can clog this pipe, causing water to backflow and drip from your indoor unit.

Signs to watch for:

  • Water dripping even when the aircon is off

  • Musty smell near the unit

  • Gurgling sounds from the pipe

Solution:A professional servicing team can clear the blockage safely using a vacuum or pressure cleaning tool.

2. Frozen Evaporator Coils

If your aircon’s coils freeze due to restricted airflow or low refrigerant levels, the ice will eventually melt — leading to water overflow.

Possible causes:

  • Dirty air filters blocking airflow

  • Low gas pressure from leaks in the system

  • Poor maintenance frequency

Solution: Turn off the unit immediately and let the ice melt. Then, call a technician to inspect gas levels and airflow balance.

3. Dirty or Clogged Air Filters

When filters are covered in dust, air cannot circulate properly. This causes condensation to form unevenly on the coils and drip out of place.

Solution: Clean your air filters every 3–4 weeks. For families with pets or elderly at home, even more frequently.

4. Faulty or Misaligned Drain Pan

Older units may have a rusted, cracked, or misaligned drain pan, which fails to collect condensation properly.

Solution: This part usually needs replacement. During regular servicing, technicians will check and align the drain pan to ensure proper water flow.

5. Improper Installation or Tilt

A new aircon that leaks water may have been installed without the correct tilt angle. The indoor unit should lean slightly backward to allow water to flow toward the drain pipe.

Solution: Call your installer to inspect the mounting and ensure the gradient is correct.
